Pet-Safe Artificial Turf Installation

The safest pet-safe artificial turf uses zinc and lead-free materials, a flow-through backing, and a deodorizing infill layer. Ecoworkz installs it over our in-house drainage design, a compacted sub-base that carries urine down and away, so your yard stays clean and odor-free in Riverside County heat.

What makes it pet turf

Why Pet Turf Is Different from Standard Artificial Grass

Standard decorative turf is designed to look good. Pet turf is built to survive paws, claws, and daily use. Four specs separate them.

Google 5 Star Reviews

Blade Density & Pile Height

A 1.25–1.75 in. turf fiber pile height at 60–80 oz face weight. That blade density stays upright under running dogs.

Flow-Through Backing

A perforated drainage backing lets urine pass straight through to the sub-base instead of pooling on top.

Shaped Blades

S- and C-shaped blades spring back instead of matting down in the lanes dogs wear into a yard.

Antimicrobial Fibers

Antimicrobial protection is woven into the yarn, not sprayed on, and it pairs with antimicrobial infill to slow bacteria.

Why climate changes the specs

Southern California Demands a Specific Pet Turf Design

Our region averages fewer than 15 inches of rain a year, so rain doesn’t flush turf clean the way it does elsewhere. Riverside County heat, dense clay soils, and the occasional winter deluge shape every spec we pick, from UV rating to excavation depth.

How We Work

Our Pet Turf Installation Process

We don’t sub this out. Our own crew handles every step, start to finish — and the difference between a lawn that looks great in photos and one that still works in 10 years is what happens before the turf goes down.

Measure & Excavate

We measure on-site, then excavate 3–4 inches. In heavy clay we dig deeper to break the compaction layer. All excavated soil is hauled off your property.

Build The Sub-Base

We lay 3 inches of Class II road base, compact it to 90% density, and grade sloped yards toward existing runoff points. Weed barrier goes on top.

Select & Cut The Turf

You compare samples on your own soil and in your own light. We cut to fit with minimal seams, and we never put a seam across a dog's running lane.

Secure Edges & Seams

We nail the perimeter every 4 inches into bender board or hardscape. Interior seams get staples, seam tape, and adhesive.

Add the Deodorizing Infill

We brush in ZeoFill ZeoLite, a natural mineral that absorbs ammonia from urine and keeps the blades upright. Some shaded or high-use zones get a silica sand blend.

Test & Walk Through

We run a hose at storm rate to test drainage, then check every seam and edge with you. Your dogs can use the yard the same day.

Odor Control

Odor Control That Holds Up Through a SoCal Summer

Infill is where odor control is won or lost. Here’s how common options perform for dogs in Southern California heat.

InfillOdor ControlHeatBest For
ZeoLite (ZeoFill)Excellent — absorbs ammoniaLower than rubberMultiple dogs, heavy use
Silica SandMinimalLowLight pet use, aesthetic
Durafill SandModerateLow–moderateSingle dog, budget-conscious
Crumb RubberPoor — traps bacteriaVery high, can exceed 160°FNot recommended for pets

For two or more dogs, we recommend ZeoLite. It costs a little more per project, and the odor control lasts the life of the turf.

Common Pet Turf Mistakes, and How We Avoid Them

When turf goes on native soil or a thin base, it compacts unevenly and urine pools. Once that happens, the smell is a structural problem, not a cleaning problem.

Low maintenance

Maintenance Your Dogs (and You) Can Live With

Anyone who calls pet turf maintenance-free is selling, not informing. Here’s the realistic calendar.

Weekly

Pick up solid waste and hose down high-use spots to flush liquid through the drainage layer.

Monthly

Rinse the whole surface and brush the traffic lanes so the blades stand back up.

Yearly

Apply a pet-safe enzyme deodorizer, then check seams and edges for lifting.

Every 3–5 years

Top up the ZeoLite in heavy-use zones to restore its ability to absorb ammonia.

Common Questions

Pet Turf Questions We Hear Most

How long does pet turf last with dogs?

A properly installed system with ZeoLite infill and a quality backing lasts 15 to 20 years under typical residential dog use. Yards with three or more large dogs see more wear in the traffic lanes, but those areas can be spot-replaced without redoing the whole lawn.

Most HOAs in Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties permit artificial turf in rear yards without restriction, and many now allow it in front yards subject to appearance guidelines. We pull permits where required and have worked with dozens of HOA architectural committees across our service area.

It’s a legitimate concern and we don’t minimize it. Synthetic turf in direct SoCal sun heats up significantly, which is why we recommend ZeoLite over rubber infill and shade structures where possible. A quick rinse drops surface temperature 30 to 40 degrees in minutes. In the Inland Empire, plan for afternoon shade on the turf zone.

Determined diggers can damage any turf. The compacted road base makes digging far less rewarding than soft dirt, and most dogs stop quickly once they hit aggregate. For known excavators we can add a perforated aluminum screen layer below the backing.

A face weight of at least 70 ounces per square yard, a urethane-coated backing, and ZeoLite infill. The heavier face weight resists matting in the specific paths large dogs wear into a lawn.

Same day. We do a final rinse, the infill settles, and once we finish the walkthrough the yard is open. Your dogs will want to investigate immediately anyway.

Permits for turf replacement aren’t typically required in residential rear yards across our service area, but requirements vary by city and sometimes by square footage. We check before we start work.

Where We Work

We Install Pet Turf Throughout SoCal

Ecoworkz has been doing this since 2007 — years of learning what works in this climate, on these soil types, under these HOA requirements. We serve homeowners across Corona, Orange County, Riverside County, Irvine, and Temecula, within our 34-mile service radius. We’ve also learned which products fail here: some turf lines marketed aggressively online use thin backings that degrade under sustained SoCal UV.

No Obligation. No Pressure.
